GSEC — GIAC Security Essentials
GIAC's entry-level broad security certification and a DoD 8140 approved baseline credential. Covers a wide range of security essentials across networking, cryptography, access control, and incident handling — broader and more technically rigorous than Security+ despite both being 'foundational' certs. Respected by employers who value GIAC credentials over CompTIA, particularly in technical and government roles. At $999 exam-only it's significantly more expensive than Security+, which limits its appeal as a first cert for budget-constrained candidates. If your employer covers training costs, GSEC is a better first credential than Security+; if you're self-funding entry into the field, Security+ first makes more financial sense.
